Two decades of climate change alters seed longevity in an alpine herb: implications for ex situ seed conservation

چکیده

Abstract Climate warming in mountain areas is increasing faster than the global average, threatening alpine plants. affects many traits including seeds, longevity of which important for conservation, facilitating genebank storage. Seeds species are considered short-lived storage, but their increases when produced under a warmer parental environment. Consequently, with climate warming, seeds may have increased fitness and be longer-lived We assessed seed artificial ageing 10 accessions arctic-alpine Viscaria alpina stored conditions different time periods over last 20 years. The collection site was northern Apennines, where above average variable precipitation has been recorded. taken viability to fall 50% ( p 50 ) estimated using probit analysis; correlation general linear regression were used investigate effects length mass on longevity. varied between 7.77 18.49 days. There no relationship storage or higher years temperature lower during growing season, having more impact temperature. results suggest that suitable inter-annual variation induces plastic response Using provides insights into how respond future changes could implications

Ecological correlates of ex situ seed longevity: a comparative study on 195 species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Extended seed longevity in the dry state is the basis for the ex situ conservation of 'orthodox' seeds. However, even under identical storage conditions there is wide variation in seed life-span between species. Here, the effects of seed traits and environmental conditions at the site of collection on seed longevity is explored for195 wild species from 71 families from envir...

Soil seed bank and seed dormancy in wild populations of lima bean (Fabaceae): considerations for in situ and ex situ conservation.

Seed dormancy and its impact on the soil seed bank for wild Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) populations were studied in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Five populations were selected in contrasted environments. In all cases, distribution of seeds in the soil was limited to 3 cm depth. No innate dormancy was observed but combination of hard seed coat and hilum opening controlled by environmental...

A role for seed storage proteins in Arabidopsis seed longevity

Proteomics approaches have been a useful tool for determining the biological roles and functions of individual proteins and identifying the molecular mechanisms that govern seed germination, vigour and viability in response to ageing. In this work the dry seed proteome of four Arabidopsis thaliana genotypes, that carry introgression fragments at the position of seed longevity quantitative trait...

Ex situ conservation of Cymbidium eburneum Lindl.: a threatened and vulnerable orchid, by asymbiotic seed germination

The population of many splendid orchids is reducing from their natural habitats at an alarming rate and their conservation is becoming a matter of global concern. Asymbiotic seed germination has been applied for ex situ conservation of rare, endangered and threatened orchid taxa and could provide rapid means their multiplication. In the present study reported here, seeds of an epiphytic and rar...

Seed bank persistence and climate change

The strong mechanistic relationship between climatic factors and seed dormancy and germination suggests that forecast climatic changes will significantly affect seed bank persistence. This review focuses on the potential impact of changing temperature, rainfall and fire regimes on the longevity of long-term persistent seed-banks. Currently, there are few studies investigating the mechanistic re...
